The Joy of Honen Shonin Founding the Jodo Shu (Pure Land) Sect [僧伽-SAMGHA-]T-Shirts

Portrait of Honen Shonin, in the possession of Daikoji Temple
Sanskrit Seed Syllable: Kiriku (for Amitabha Buddha)

This painting depicts Honen Shonin, the founder of the Jodo Shu (Pure Land) sect.

Honen Shonin secluded himself in the library of Seiryuji Temple on Mt. Hiei, where, among many sutras, he discovered a passage from Master Shandao's *Commentary on the Meditation Sutra*.

He realized that by reciting "Namu Amida Butsu" (Homage to Amitabha Buddha) with complete devotion, one could be reborn in the Pure Land after death.

This artwork captures the joy of that moment of realization.

Afterward, Honen Shonin resolved,

"I must spread this salvation of Amida Buddha and bring deliverance to all."

Thus, he left Mt. Hiei and embarked on the path of teaching, marking the founding of the Jodo Shu sect.
