Moji Mandara 文字曼荼羅:僧伽-SAMGHA:Mandala ToteBag

This ink drawing, created by the head priest of Nichiren-sect Keimeiin, is based on the mandala of Nichiren Buddhism.

At the center is the inscription Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō. It is often referred to as the “Hige Daimoku” (“Bearded Daimoku”), but in fact, these are not beards. They are called “Kōmyōten” (“points of radiance”), representing the light of the Buddha.

The depiction of the Four Heavenly Kings in each direction symbolizes the spreading of the Buddha’s teachings throughout the entire world. Those who receive this light, regardless of who they are, are shown to be dwelling within the Buddha’s realm.

Although not illustrated in this particular design, traditional mandalas also depict figures such as Devadatta (who, according to legend, fell into hell), the Ashura King (dwelling in the world of anger), and even Māra, the demon king who obstructs Buddhist practice. Their inclusion demonstrates that through receiving the Buddha’s teachings, all beings — no matter how tormented — can be saved and attain Buddhahood.
