Jroku Shaka Nyorai-丈六釈迦如来-[僧伽-SAMGHA-]T-Shirts

Jōroku Shaka Nyorai (Housed at Kaikō-ji Temple)

A masterpiece from the Kamakura period, crafted by the renowned father-and-son sculptors Unkei and Tankei. Standing at an impressive 5.4 meters tall, this Buddha statue has been venerated as a "Substitute Buddha" who once protected Emperor Go-Mizunoo from harm. To this day, it remains affectionately known as "Jōroku-san" in Kyoto.

The statue represents the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, at his actual height of one jō six shaku (approximately 5.4 meters). In the Edo period, it was believed to have taken the place of Emperor Go-Mizunoo during an assassination attempt. Because of the scars and bloodstains said to remain on its neck from that incident, it is especially worshipped as a protector against illnesses of the head and neck, and as a guardian deity who takes on misfortunes in place of believers.
